Much of Wolverine's memories were manipulated by the Weapon X program, so his memories of his past are somewhat unreliable. (Wolverine #50) Originally Logan was an operative for Canada's Department H and Weapon X programs. It was there that he was trained to be a soldier and assassin. We do know that during this time he had worked with Sabretooth, Omega Red, and Captain America on different missions. We also know that at some point during the Weapon X program, adamantium metal was bonded (at the cellular level) to Logan's skeleton. His mutant healing factor barely keeping him alive, he managed to flee the Weapon X lab. He was later found by a member of the Canadian group, Alpha Flight and joined them. It was at this time that he adopted the nickname "Wolverine". Before too long, however, Professor Charles Xavier "drafted" Wolverine to be a part of a new X-Men group. (Giant-Size X-Men #1) Over the years, Wolverine's gruff and violent ways have often clashed with the X-Men's belief in peace between mutants and humans. Of course, sometimes his compassionate side does show through, especially when acting as a father figure to fellow X-Men Shadowcat (Kitty Pryde) and Jubilee. When the X-Men decided to launch an attack on Magneto's Asteroid M base, Wolverine led the final assault. In a rage, Wolverine managed to wound Magneto. In retaliation, Magneto magnetically ripped the adamantium from Wolverine's skeleton! (X-Men #25) Barely surviving the ordeal, Logan was almost afraid to face the Danger Room workout. While training, he was shocked to discover that his claws were actually bone, and not pure metal as originally believed! (Wolverine #75) Believing he could not "pull his own weight", Wolverine then left the X-Men. As time progressed, Wolverine learned that Professor Xavier had taken Sabretooth into the X-Men's mansion. Determined to stop Sabretooth for good, Wolverine enter Sabretooth's holding cell and extended a claw into Sabretooth's brain! (Wolverine #90) At that moment, however, their reality was transformed into the "Age of Apocalypse". Wolverine was transformed into a freedom fighter-Weapon X, and Sabtetooth was transformed into a member of the Astonishing X-Men! (X-Men Alpha) In this reality, Logan still had his adamantium skeleton, but he lost his left hand during a fight with the government agent Cyclops. Logan/ Weapon X helped score many victories against Apocalypse before reality returned to normal. The damage Wolverine had done to Sabretooth had not been fatal, but it pushed Wolverine over the edge: he was further losing his humanity. (X-Men Prime) Again he left the X-Men. Not long after that, The same scientists who had originally given Logan the adamantium skeleton eventually captured him. They were trying to duplicate their earlier success, but had failed every time. Unfortunately, Logan did not want the adamantium! The bonding process failed and what was left of Wolverine became more animal than human. (Wolverine #100) Over time, though, Wolverine's humanity has gradually returned, but he is still not the same person he was before Magneto's attack. Wolverine's abilities include heightened senses, a mutant healing ability to survive almost any wound, and retractable bone claws. He now possesses an almost animal-like ferociousness. It remains to be seen if adamantium can once again be bonded to his skeleton (or if he even wants the metal bonded to him).
