Fleeing from Batman, [a two-bit criminal dove] into a vat of chemicals, causing his skin to turn chalk white, [his] hair green, and his lips deep red. Sometimes he'll committ crimes just to taunt Batman. It was the Joker who shot and crippled Barbara Gordon, the former Batgirl. (Batman: The Killing Joke) And later, in a brutal attack, the Joker murdered Jason Todd, the second Robin, [Jason Todd] (Batman #428), as well as Commissioner Gordon's wife, Sarah Essen-Gordon. The Joker is now safely locked away in Arkham Asylum.
