SPIDER-MAN BIOGRAPHY

Originally produced as a one-shot for the final issue of the to-be-discontinued sci-fi/fantasy/horror comic Amazing Fantasy, Marvel Comic's newest addition to the "long-underwear crowd" was conceived as, in publisher/co-creator Stan Lee's own words, a "superschnook", "not too handsome, not too glamorous, not too graceful, not too muscular -- in other words, sort of the way I might be if I had a super power". And like Marvel's previously introduced Fantastic Four and Incredible Hulk, which were picking up in popularity, Spider-Man would also be saddled with a complete all-weather travelling set of personal baggage.

Thus it came to be how brilliant but shy and unpopular high school science whiz Peter Parker found himself with superhuman strength and agility, the ability to walk on walls, and a precognitive sixth sense for danger, after being bitten by a spider dying from accidental exposure to a powerful radioactive charge at a school science exhibition.

Eager to test his newborn powers, Peter, in a makeshift hood, challenges a wrestler at a local street carnival to a bout, and easily wins $100 after carrying his opponent bodily up a support pole, both astonishing and thrilling his audience, which included a television promoter, who offers Peter a chance to be a star.

Ready to cash in on the opportunity of a lifetime, young Parker shows up at the studio, in full Spider-man regalia, including homemade wrist-mounted webshooting devices, and is an instant hit. On his way out after his debut performance, Peter passively watches as a thief, chased by a shouting security guard, grabs the nearest elevator and makes a clean getaway. Confronted by the angry guard, Peter dismisses his reprobations, telling him, "Sorry, pal! That's your job! ... From now on I just look out for number one -- that means -- me!"

Some nights later, after another performance, Peter returns home to his beloved aunt and uncle, to find in front the house a police car: his uncle, the officers tell him, has been fatally shot after surprising a burglar. Enraged, Peter dons his outfit and sets out determined to catch the killer, now holed up, according to police, in a waterfront warehouse.

At the warehouse, Peter makes short work of his spooked prey, but discovers, to his astonishment and horror, the killer to be (surprise, surprise!) the one and the same thief he had days earlier allowed to escape the tv studio. After delivering the burglar to the waiting police at the end of a giant webline, Peter tearfully comes to the realization that "with great power there must also come -- great reponsibility", and slinks off into the night, soon to embark on an entirely different, and doubtlessly more exciting life as a crime-busting card-carrying superhero.
